Floor Lamps Create the Perfect Glow

red glowing floor lampEven with the use of dimmer switches and different combinations or ceiling lights it can be hard to create a relaxing glow in your home. There is nothing quite like the effect of a well placed and suitable lamp. A floor lamp can be exactly what is required to create ambiance in an otherwise boring room. It can add both light and a design element and you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune.

Floor lamps come in a range of shapes and sizes and can have a multitude of different shades designed to fit in with interior design ideas. You could go for a glass shade, brass, bronze or brushed steel base or just a classical wooden turned stand. In fact the number of options is more or less endless.

Placed in the corner of a room a floor lamp will cast enough light to be used as task lighting. If you want to highlight something which is on your walls you could always opt for an uplighter to cast light onto a picture or mirror.

In most cases you can expect your floor lamp to be around five feet tall, however don't underestimate the effect you can get from placing a smaller lamp on the floor. Lamps dotted around the room behind furniture can create a glow which comes from the floor and looks otherworldly.

So how much can you expect to pay? For much less than £10 you can find basic floor lamps with plain metal stands and a basic uplighter shade. These are great for any room and will not make a statement as such but will cast light without intruding on your overall design.

Floor lamps with long paper shades are also in the cheaper category. The shades can stretch from the floor to the top of the lamp and because they are paper they will let much of the light out while diffusing it. These come in a range of different colours and are cheap and cheerful.

If you are willing to spend a bit more on a statement piece there are certainly many to choose from. Most will have modern and sleek bases and stands and will keep their flourish for the shade. You can choose from hand crafted knitted or crocheted shades or they could be in luxury fabrics such as silk or velvet. If you are willing to pay the price you can have a bespoke piece deigned especially for your room – but expect to pay hundreds or even thousands of pounds for this privilege.

A floor lamp may seem like a waste of space, but the light it casts and the atmosphere it gives to a room cannot be matched by ceiling lights and you will never regret splashing out on a few floor lamps in your home.
